Exhibit Details
Woodland Park Zoo is proud of the exciting new penguin habitat. The old exhibit was built in 1947 for sea lions and seals. We thought it was time for the penguins to get a home built just for them.
And what a home it is! Some features of the new exhibit include:
- Prime viewing through a 30-foot-long thick glass barrier. Guests can watch the penguins swim and play underwater, or watch the penguins waddling on land.
- A recreation of the unique coastal desert shorelines of Punta San Juan, Peru, complete with rocky tide pools, moving water, and “ocean currents” that the penguins will utilize when they swim.
- A “splash zone” where kids can play and be surprised by a blowhole. Careful, you might get wet!
- A wooden fishing boat, just like those used in Peru, that looks like it has been dragged onto the beach, giving visitors the feeling they are in a fishing village in Punta San Juan, Peru (which is home to the world’s largest Humboldt penguin conservation reserve).
There are many more surprises at the Humboldt penguin exhibit. What are you waiting for? Come see it for yourself!
